This app makes it easy to take control of iPhone video slow-mo and speed-up effects with a curve editing feature for smooth yet dramatic transitions.
The iPhone shoots excellent video quality, and Apple provides some nice built-in editing options, but sometimes there’s a need for an app that adds something a little bit extra to make a reel stand out as something special. The good news is that there’s an app for that. In truth, there are plenty of apps that offer advanced video editing and effects, making it hard to narrow in on one particular solution. Here’s one that has a unique time-bending capability, and it’s free.
The iPhone comes with a few different built-in options to control the flow of time when recording video. Time-lapse speeds things up by taking a picture every few seconds and playing it back as a video that runs at 30 frames per second. Slow-motion records video at a faster than average pace capturing either 120 or 240 frames per second, then playing back with a variable speed that starts at the fast rate then does a dramatic slow down to one-quarter or one-eighth before rising to the maximum. A big downside to these playback speed options is that the resolution is reduced to 1080p or lower. In addition, time-lapse offers no way to control the speed after its recorded, and slow-motion only allows adjusting what section of the video is slowed in one place.
VN Video Editor is a very nice reels and story editor with plenty of templates to quickly put together clips and photos. It has plenty of music and sound effects, as well as some unique and eye-catching transitions. However, VN Video Editor’s most interesting effect is its curve-based speed control. This allows freeform adjustment of the playback speed of a video clip by placing and dragging points along a curve. Real-time previews are shown, making it easy to get the perfect timing. This allows a complete video to be included while speeding through boring parts of a video before downshifting to a nice smooth slo-mo effect at the crescendo of the action. There’s no limit to how many speed adjustments can be made, and since it’s a curve editor, the video flows organically from fast to slow to normal speed in any sequence. It is ad-supported, but they are unobtrusive, and videos are saved without a watermark at full quality.
VN Video Editor Tracks, Keyframes & Titles
VN Video Editor is quite a full-featured app, including multiple tracks for video, audio, titles, and a keyframe editor that allows precise animation. Users can use keyframes on videos, pictures, stickers, and titles, with 10 presets for quick effects, or make a custom animation by setting each keyframe, and the app will transition the image or title through all of those points.
Cropping, trimming, picture in picture, and more are well laid out, responsive, and easy to use. In addition, it outputs high-quality video at up to 4K resolution with 60 frames per second, and a variety of aspect ratios are supported. This makes it easy to create great-looking videos for social media and other uses. The VN Video Editor app is available for iPhoneiPad and Mac computers as a free download from Apple’s App Store.
