‘Huge role’ for forest industries in emissions reduction, says Minister

Senator Murray Watt

Australia’s forest industries have a huge role to play in emissions reduction according to federal government Minister responsible for the industries , Senator Murray Watt.

The Minister made the comment when delivering a speech on Australia’s agriculture sector to the National Rural Press Club in Canberra on Tuesday.

“Of course, the forestry industry has a huge role to play in our emissions reduction task. If we get the right investment framework and the right regulation we can create the carbon sinks that we’ll need to help remove carbon from our atmosphere,” Miinister Watt said..

“This is an incredibly exciting opportunity and I’m really looking forward to working with all in the sector to realise it.”

Senator Watt’s comments have been welcomed by the Australian Forest Products Association (AFPA) Chief Executive Officer, Ross Hampton.

“All of us who work across forest industries know the great work our sector does harnessing carbon from the and locking it into essential and renewable atmosphere timber and fiber products.” Hampton said.

“It was good to hear Minister Watt formally acknowledge this, and the opportunities for the sector with respect to Australia’s emissions reduction.”
